Engineers Without Borders - Hong Kong (EWB-HK) is an independent and non-profit making humanitarian organization dedicated to the provision of professional assistance by engineers and professionals of the built environment such as architects, surveyors, builders, information technology, as well as other personnel of technical competence, in humanitarian work.

We strive to improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness in the deployment of resources when assisting disaster-stricken and impoverished communities.

We aim to enhance the capacity of Hong Kong’s practising and young professionals in responding to the needs of these communities.

The objectives of Engineers Without Borders (Hong Kong) are:

	1.		to provide engineering and technical support to disaster-relief and development agencies;
	2.		to support the pursuit for sustainable communities, with particular focus on alleviating poverty and reversing environmental degradation;
	3.		to build capacity and increase the level of preparedness of Hong Kong engineering and built environment professionals in responding to the needs of disaster-stricken and disadvantaged communities;
	4.		to set up and maintain the "Register of Humanitarian Engineers & Professionals" in Hong Kong;
	5.		to provide eingineering and technical supports to local charity organizatins and humanitarian organizations.

Everybody who supports the mission of EWB-HK is welcome to join us as EWB-HK member.

Engineers, architects, surveyors, planners, builders and other built environment professionals who are prepared to serve as volunteers for disaster-struck or disadvantaged communities are also invited to sign up in our "Register of Humanitarian Engineers and Professionals".

We are prepared to offer engineering and professional supports to any charitable bodies engaged in humanitarian work. Please contact us to join our network of Organizational Partnerships.

Membership Fee for 2012-2013

Dear Members,
We would like to remind you that it is time to pay our annual membership fees. A resolution has been passed in last year AGM (October, 2011) that in addition to the HK$100 annual membership fee, life membership fee can also be collectable at HK$1,000. The membership fee can be submitted by the following methods :
1. By Cheque
Send a Crossed Cheque Payable to “Engineers Without Borders” together with the renewal form by post to EWB-HK, Unit B, 13/F, Prat Commercial Building, 17-19 Prat Avenue, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong

2. Bank Transfer

Hiking Activity - Tung Chung to Ngong Ping via Shek Mun Kap

Gathering with Rotary Club

Susanna, the Chairman and David, the Council Member attended the annual general meeting of Rotaract Club of Kowloon West and Rotaract Club of Guia on 11 December 2010. During the meeting, Susanna introduced the establishment and operation of EWB. David described in some length our repair works to the building of Chan Yin Temple Primary School in Dong Pei Village, Gan Zi County of Sichuan Province in July this year. Rotaract Club of Kowloon West showed interest in such projects, but expected the target place could be nearer Hong Kong. EWB will actively probe into the possibility of such joint efforts.

香港無國界工程師主辦 - 貴州省正安縣、道真縣村級衛生室竣工驗收及開幕典禮

是次竣工驗收工作共有7所衛生室。

EWB-HK 與貴州省遵義市及縣/鎮政府部門合作的貴州省三所村級衛生將於十月完工。EWB-HK已於五月委派志願專業人員前往當地考察施工階段進度，確保施工工程的質量。

現三所村級衛生室的工程已進入最後階段，並將於十月底竣工，並以捐助機構或捐助者授意命名：

（一）　流渡鎮和平村銅鑼灣獅子會衛生室
（二）　市坪鎮市坪村黎惠芳衛生室
（三）　市坪鄉河渡村銅鑼灣獅子會詹鄭小妹紀念衛生室

除驗收以上三所衛生室，還會協助慈恩基金會在正安縣和道真縣的四所衛生室進行驗收工作，現誠邀有意者一同出發協助驗收（除建築/工程專業化人員外，亦歡迎各界人士參與）.

參加者需自支費用。

是次行程大致如下：

10月23日（六）	驗收正安縣三所衛生室
10月24日（日）	驗收慈恩基金會的四所衛生室

EWB-HK Historical Trial

Aim to explore the earliest inhabitant of western district was British troops follow by China refurgee around 1850, moving up the wealthy people who lived in the Peak area. The route covers 25 historical buildings and sites. Our walk will be approx 2~3 hours. The walk will be started from taking the 120 year old tram service in HK to the Western district where was the first developed district in Hong Kong.

Building Design to Foster a Quality and Sustainable Built Environment

The Council for Sustainable Development launched a public engagement process on Building Design to Foster a Quality and Sustainable Built Environment. The Council appealed to all sectors to participate in the public discussion, including professional groups, green groups, property developers, academia, and the end users – the property owners and tenants. This is the key to making this exercise a success, in terms of both the process itself and the outcomes it would bring about.

The issues being examined in the public engagement exercise are as follows:

How to achieve sustainable design in terms of building separation, setback from narrow streets, and greenery;
How to balance the need for essential, green and amenity features of buildings against the increase in building height and size that they create; and
How to improve energy efficiency of buildings through more effective and sustainable building design.

As one of the professional associations in Hong Kong, EWB would like to contribute to the “Building Design & a quality sustainable built environment” program. We are going to hold a workshop on the 31st of July to gather some ideas on how to build a quality sustainable environment for our society.

1st Annual General Meeting will be held on 25th July 2009 at 6:00p.m at the Four Seas Restaurant on the 14th Floor, Li Ka Shing Tower in Polytechnic University. The current Board of Councillors will give an account of the projects and performance of the last year and an election of the Councillors of the next year will be held.
